President & Co-Founder: Steven Armentrout, PhD
Location: Virginia, US
Industry: DNA-Nanotechnology
Venture is: Seed Level

Parabon® NanoLabs designs and develops nano-enabled products made possible by proprietary technology for precisely directing the self-assembly of designer macromolecules from molecular subcomponents (e.g., enzymes, metals and pharmaceuticals) using DNA as a fundamental enabler. Although DNA is best known as a carrier of genetic information, strands of DNA can be programmed with sequences that self-assemble into arbitrarily shaped "molecular breadboards," which can be richly functionalized and mass-produced – feats not achievable with any other nanotechnologies at this time.

The computational complexity of determining effective DNA sequences has heretofore stymied its widespread use for nano-assembly; however, Parabon has advanced both the fabrication methods and computational tools needed to rapidly design and produce multi-functional macromolecules using DNA, effectively replacing the current paradigm of "molecular discovery" with that of "molecular design."

Developed over the past four years, Parabon's inSequio Sequence Design Studio is a one-of-a-kind computer-aided design (CAD) application that optimizes DNA sequences for nano-engineering using grid-scale supercomputing capacity. Utilizing this revolutionary technology, scientists within NanoLabs have designed macromolecules for use in the areas of cancer therapeutics, detergent additives, nano-arrays for rapid readouts of human DNA and nano-sensors for bioweapons defense and other applications.

Parabon NanoLabs, Inc. has formed to capitalize on the commercial opportunities made possible by its technology for creating a new class of designer macromolecules. These engineered molecular structures - not producible with the traditional methods of pharmacology, chemistry or microelectronics - can be used for an almost limitless range of purposes. The image below illustrates the precision with which molecular subcomponents can be positioned, as well as unique addressability of one of the Company’s designs.
