Nanodelivery of Cerebrolysin as adjunct therapy with Functionalized magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles enhances neuroprotection

1. Functionalized magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (FMIONPs) are used as adjunct therapy in cancer to effectively enhance cellular damages of cancerous cells sparing normal cells using chemotherapy or heat treatment. The FMIONPs are considered safe. 2. However, we used FMIONPs in whole body hyperthermia (WBH) akin to cancer therapy in a rat model and found exacerbation of brain pathology after WBH that was most prominent at 24 h after heat insult. 3. To reduce FMIONPs induced exacerbation of brain pathology in WBH, we used cerebrolysin (a balanced composition of neurotrophic factors and active peptide fragments) with or without TiO2 nanowired delivery after 4 h of WBH treatment in conjugation with FMIONPs administration. 4. Our novel observations show that nanowired delivery of cerebrolysin reduces FMIONPs induced brain pathology in WBH remarkably. 5. We propose that nanowired delivery of Cerebrolsyin could be used as adjunct therapy in cancer treatment to protect normal cell damage where FMIONPs are required to enhance the effects of chemotherapy or heat treatment.
