Use of different antibiotics and bactericides in treatment of wounds has resulted in several side effects together with development of resistant bacterial strains. The need is to develop safe and new route for the treatment of infected wounds. In this regard, herbal formulations have reached extensive acceptability as a therapeutic agent for different diseases. Also, silver and gold are long being recognized and used as elements with strong biocidal actions against many bacterial strains and microorganisms. Considering this the present research is designed to formulate a medicine that incorporated both the natural and traditional way of treating wounds. For this purpose methanolic extracts of Cuscuta europaea and Psidium gunjava leaves were used as reducing agent for the synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles, thereby incorporating nanoparticles in the extract. The nanoparticle doped extract, in different dilutions, was then checked for its efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, streptococcus, and Micrococcus Luteus. Preliminary results suggest that silver and gold nanoparticles have an inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a concentration dependant manner, whereas the gold nanoparticle is effective against Streptococcus giving another hope for overcoming delayed healing and poor response to treatments of wounds in this part of world.
