Synthesis of a light sensitive SWCNT/(Pb, Zn)-phosphate glass composite and it’s optical, light induced ESR, electronic and optoelectronic properties are reported. Absorption spectrum of SWCNTs of the composite differs from that of its film. Since the composite was prepared by melt-quenched technique, various types of stress are expected to generate inside the host during its cooling cycle. The SWCNTs in the composite thus suffer from stress induced deformations (bending, torsion, compression etc). The observed change in the absorption spectrum of the SWCNTs of the composite is due to their conformational deformations and subsequent band structure modulation. This phenomenon makes the composite a good electrical conductor. UV-Vis light-induced ESR spectrum of the composite, shows a large enhancement of the signal of the conduction electrons of its SWCNTs and appearance of a new signal at the lower field region with g = 2.45 and ∆Hpp = 9.0mT, which owes its origin to (Pb+3) hole. A phenomenon of creation of charge separation in the system due to the light induced generation of Pb+3 – holes by releasing electrons from the interstitial Pb+2 – sites of the host and capture of those electrons by the SWCNTs is thus observed. Photo-conduction studies show the SWCNTs of the composite act as a good medium of transport of this charge – carriers.
