Nanoparticle-coated nanosprings for diagnostic applications using SERS based detection

,

Keywords: , ,

Significant enhancements in the SERS signals may be obtained with elongated arrangement of silver or gold nanoparticles. Silica nanosprings (NS) with high surface to volume ratio are promising candidate to yield such sensor materials. In this study, Au or Ag NP-coated NS were prepared by different physical or chemical deposition approaches. AgNP-coated NS were found to give better responses compared to AuNP-coated NS, with detection capabilities below 1 attomol (10-18) of thiophenol. The use of these SERS-active materials for ultrasensitive DNA detection using a sandwich nucleic acid assay will be demonstrated.
