Recently, it was observed that nanostructured zirconium oxide, ZrO2, powder exhibits enhanced performance in many applications. We report the polyol route for the synthesis of nanocrystalline ZrO2 powder, and its characterization by TG/DTA, FTIR, XRD and TEM techniques. Calcination of the as-synthesized product at 300°C produced metastable tetragonal (t) ZrO2, while calcination at 600°C yielded a mixture of both t-ZrO2 and monoclinic (m) ZrO2 phases, according to XRD. TEM showed that ZrO2 synthesized by the polyol route and calcined for 6h at 600°C results in 100 – 1000 nm agglomerates of ~25 nm particles, which compares favorably with the crystalline size calculated from the XRD data.
