Fabrication and optical properties of nanoscale arrays of Au and Pd in polymers

We report the fabrication of regular repeat structures of Au and Pd square islands embedded in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC). Using focussed ion beam (FIB), square islands were machined over a 5 micron square area of Au or Pd deposited on Si or glass. The patterns were subseuqently embedded in a polymer matrix of varying thicknesss (1 – 100 nm) using solution self-assembly. The optical properties of the nanocomposites as a function of material compositon and feature size were subsequently investigated. The approach provides a useful insight into structure-property relationships useful for future optical device applications.
