In the present study, we chose Nb as a binary alloying element because it has excellent biocompatibility and be expected to act as a -stabilizer. The purities of the starting raw materials were 99.99% for Ti and 99.9% for Nb. A series of Ti-xNb alloys(x:10.20,30 and 40wt%)were prepared. Small alloy buttons of 10mm in diameter were prepared by arc melting on a water sealed copper hearth under an argon gas atmosphere with a non-consumable tungsten electrode. Electrochemical experiments were carried out using a direct current (DC) voltage source(KJPP-5003, KapJin, Korea). All anodization experiments were carried out at room temperature. 1M H3PO4 with small amounts of fluoride ions were used as electrolytes. Microstructural morphology, crystallinity and composition of oxide layer were observed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), x-ray diffractometer(XRD), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and Energy-dispersive spectrometer(EDS), respectively.
