Metal clusters embedded in fullerite matrices are produced by high vacuum co-evaporation. XPS and X-ray absorption revealed that the metal clusters are protected against contamination. XRD analysis is used to determine the average custer size, which ranges from 3 to 20 nm. The fullerite matrix presents long-range ordering. XMCD is used to investigate separately the spin and orbital moments. These measurements revealed antiferromagnetic coupling between surface and bulk atoms. Giant orbital moments for the surface atoms are found from XMCD sum rule analysis. MOKE is used to identify the magnetic anisotropy of the films.
