A new strategy of creating nucleic acid nanostructures is described. Our approach is based not on isotropic dsDNA (or RNA) molecules, but on these molecules fixed in spatial structure of their liquid-crystalline particles. The nanostructure formed has unique properties. Present areas for application of the DNA-based nanostructured material are outlined. Examples for application of the DNA nanostructures as biosensing units are shown.Possible medical applications of the new biomaterial are discussed.
