Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS) have aroused huge global interest, with over 800 patents and more than 2300 articles published to date. POSS comprises a central inorganic cage structure enveloped by an organic shell. The inorganic component lends rigidity and thermal stability whereas the organic moieties impart compatibility and reactivity with the matrix. The unique hybrid inorganic-organic composition gives a unique spectrum of properties not attainable from conventional materials. Since commercial availability of POSS began 10 years ago, the POSS family of nanostructured chemicals have proven their utility in many and varied fields. More established applications include flow aids for high temperature polymers, dental restoratives and packaging. More recently, POSS trisilanols have emerged as dispersants suited to specialty fillers in high temperature polymers. POSS epoxies are finding application due to their ability to retain useful mechanical properties at temperatures where competing materials soften and fail. Lastly we describe a revolutionary, newly discovered POSS lubricant with remarkable properties.
