Biofunctionalization of laser-ablated gold nanoparticles

For the first time, we investigated the biofunctional activity of gold nanoparticles prepared by nanosecond pulsed laser ablation in liquid media. This method allows the fabrication of gold nanoparticles surrounded by a metastable gold oxide shell. The functional properties of gold colloids are studied through the efficiency of the bonding between gold and amino-groups. This interaction is characterized by means of plasmon-related absorption spectra of nanoparticles. We observed a 10-20 nm red shift of the absorption peak, which is associated to the linkage of gold to amino-groups. Also, our results have demonstrated that the oxidation of gold is directly related to the bonding efficiency. This efficiency decreases significantly (from 100% to 20%) with the increasing gold oxidation degree. This experiment is a unique possibility to study the functional properties of metastable materials such as gold oxide. It is also the very first study of the biofunctionality of laser-ablated gold nanoparticles.
