Novel Approach for Preparation of Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Nanocomposites

Novel organic/inorganic hybrid nanocomposites were synthesized through surface initiated grafting polymerization in the presence of silica particles coated with methacryloxy(propyl)trimethoxysilane. Well-defined polymer chains were grown from the nanoparticle surfaces to yield individual particles composed of a silica core and a well-defined, densely grafted outer poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) or poly(methyl methacrylate) layer. The effects of the silica seed diameter, silica contents, and grafting density of the polymer chain on the microstructure and properties of the hybrid materials were investigated by TEM, SEM, DSC, TGA, and BSP tester, respectively. It was found that the hybrid materials exhibited a homogeneity regardless of particle sizes because of the existence of the covalent bond between polymer chains and silica nanoparticles that increased the compatibility between the organic and inorganic phases. The thermal and mechanical properties of the hybrid materials were obviously improved when silica was incorporated.
