Optimize Your Microfluidic Designs Using CFD

Description: Computational Fluid Dynamics, or CFD, is increasingly being used to model and optimize microfluidic systems. Success of a microfluidic device depends on its ability to accurately control microscale fluid volumes. These devices rely on a combination of hydrodymanic and/or electrohydrodynamic (electrophoresis and dielectrophoresis) forces. FLOW-3D®’s multi-physics solver is capable of solving processes that simultaneously involve fluid flow, heat transfer, phase change, centrifugal forces and electrohydrodyamic interactions. At the same time FLOW-3D® can solve for rigid body motion and deformation of structures like membranes and flexing walls in a fully coupled manner. This presentation will show many microfluidic processes and devices that FLOW-3D® simulates, including joule heating, multiphase flows, microvalves, micropumps, micromixers and lab on a chip.
