Oil Based Polymer Silver Nanocomposite Materials Prepared by Light-induced Crosslinking Polymerization

Abstract A new synthetic method for in situ synthesis of oil based nanocomposite film containing silver nanoparticles is presented. Unlike conventional synthetic method, silver nanoparticles and the nanocomposite film were synthesized simultaneously. The whole process was divided into two stages; (i) copolymerization of macromonomers with styrene and (ii) the reduction of silver nitrate to metallic silver nano particles with radicals, stemming from photolysis of 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMPA) through ultraviolet irradiation. The amount of radical initiator influenced the size of silver nanoparticles formed within the polymer films. Nanocomposites film were characterized by TEM and TGA.The obtained polymer nanocomposite film was also examined in view of antibacterial effect against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and Spore forming bacteria. It was demonstrated that nanocomposite samples exhibited an antibacterial effect against these bacteria.
