Photo-induced dispersion of platinum nano-clusters on TiO2 sol-gel layers

We have studied a photo-platinization method adapted to TiO2 sol-gel thin films. Photocatalytic characterizations based on the photo-decomposition of Orange G under UV exposure show that platinization yields an enhancement of the film photo-activities by a factor 4 or more. Mechanisms and experimental parameters that control the amount, distribution and chemical state of platinum nano-clusters dispersed at the film surface have been investigated. It is shown that best platinization conditions essentially rely on a photolytic reduction mechanism in the liquid solution, which yields a stable suspension of platinum nano-clusters of mono-disperse size (2 nm) diluted in a water-ethanol medium. This suspension leads in turn to a homogeneous dispersion of platinum clusters at the TiO2 film surface. It is shown that this method can also be adapted to the preparation of liquid suspensions based on many kinds of noble metals (Ag, Au…), which can be dispersed at the surface of various supports or dispersed in various sol-gel derived matrices, and allow envisaging applications in different additional fields.
