Nanostructured LZO Films: Synthesis and Characterizations

Nanocrystalline lanthanum zirconium oxide (LZO) films have been successfully synthesized by a wet-chemical route, using dried lanthanum acetate, zirconium propoxide, propoionic acid, acetic acid glacial, and anhydrous methanol. X-ray 2 -scan diffraction patterns of the LZO film deposited on the Ni/W substrate displays only the (400) peak. X-ray -scan diffraction data show that the LZO films exhibit out-of-plane alignment along . Field emission gun scanning electron microscope images indicate that LZO films are composed of nanoparticles with an average size of about 25 nm. FTIR, TGA and the FEGSEM data demonstrate that organic complexes possibly composed of acetate, lanthanum, and/or zirconium persisted in the sintered LZO film. The Taguchi Design has been employed to assist to examine effects of composition and solution chemistry of precursors in the synthesis. The growth mechanism of the LZO film is attempted to be described as follows: precursors firstly form complexes in a LZO precursor solution, then underwent a thermal hydrolysis at elevated temperature which led to nucleation and subsequently grew into nanoparticles, then the nanoparticles coalesced together, constructing a dense film at higher temperature.
