Bio-Info-Nano Research and Development Institute (BIN-RDI)

Bio-Info-Nano Research and Development Institute (BIN-RDI)

University of California Santa Cruz / NASA

Biotechnology, coupled with information technology and nanotechnology, is widely expected to be the next major transformational technological revolution. Bio-Info-Nano convergence science has the potential to fundamentally transform products, industries and delivery systems across most elements of the economy and human society; the scale of socio-economic impact is projected to exceed that of the silicon integrated circuit.

The University of California, with UC Santa Cruz as the lead institution, building upon its partnership with NASA Ames through the University Affiliated Research Center (UARC), is leading the creation of the Bio-Info-Nano Research and Development Institute (BIN-RDI). The mission of the BIN-RDI is to couple the extensive research talent of UC, NASA Ames and industrial affiliates towards excellence in convergence science and technology. The Institute also will host a policy center positioned to exert national influence on nanoscale technology issues through assessments of the impacts of BIN research and commercialization on society, ethics and commerce.
