Synthesis of superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles for thermoresponsive drug delivery

Superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized via modified coprecipitation method and their physical properties were examined. The crystal structure of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. From the dynamic laser scattering analysis, the size of the MNPs ranged from 20 to 100 nm. According the transmission electron microscopy, the morphology of the MNPs is polyhedral and the size distribution of these MNPs based on the TEM photography is consistent with the DLS result. Supermagnetism of these MNPs was examined by SQUID magnetometer, and the result shows that MNPs synthesized in this study are superparamagnetic. The heating effect of these MNPs under AC magnetic field produced by a high frequency induction heater, were examined. The strength and frequency of the applied magnetic field were 5 kA/m and 69.44 kHz, respectively. The time courses of temperature increase by varying the weights of MNPs were recorded. It was found that as the weight of these MNPs increased, the higher the increase in temperature was observed. Besides, the temperature increase ( T) has reached 8.7 °C in 15 min, in the case of 20 mg of MNPs addition in 2 ml water, which is applicable for hyperthermia and thermoresponsive drug delivery application.
