In-situ Synthesis and Functionalization of Metal Nanoparticles

50 to 100 nanometer iron particles are produced and subsequently passivated by Particle Atomic Layer Deposition (Particle -ALD) of nanometer thick inorganic oxide films, in-situ, prior to exposure to air. The particles are characterized and evaluated for oxidation resistance using a thermogravimetric analyzer. Such passivated magnetic nanoparticles have significant uses in the areas of data storage, magnetic drug delivery, and stealth coatings. The process has been extended to include the in-situ synthesis/functionalization of Ni, Cu, and Co nanoparticles as well.
