Functional Plastic Liquid Crystal Displays from II-VI Semiconductor Nanocomposite Thin Film Transistors on Polymers

This talk describes how II-VI semiconductors can be deposited from solution to create all-inorganic TFTs on plastic. We discuss semiconductor film growth mechanisms that arise from competition among nanoparticle formation, particle-particle accretion in solution and ion deposition at interfaces. All of these affect the quality of the TFT. By judicious control of deposition parameters, and regulation of polymer thermo-mechanics, arrays of TFTs can be deposited on plastic substrates. We demonstrate a novel combination of inorganic semiconductor TFT, plastic substrate and switching architecture that results switchable color pixels from combinations of conventional LEDs and liquid crystal.
