Effects of interface on the physical properties of nanoparticle-filled composites

The effects of interface affinity on the rheological responses of nanoparticle suspended polymer solutions were investigated. The polarity on rheological properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticle filled-polymer solution was investigated for polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polystyrene (PS). Both polymer solutions were prepared, respectively, at various loading levels.The PAN solutions with ZnO nanoparticles showed higher dynamic viscosity ( ') than pure PAN. However, ' of PS solutions with ZnO higher than 2 wt% was lower than that of the pure PS. In the elastic properties of PAN solutions, a maximum value of G' or G'' was observed for 1 wt% loading in the same manner as the ' data. PS solutions containing ZnO nanoparticles more than 2wt% had lower G' or G'' with increasing particle concentration compared with pure PS solution. While the presence of ZnO nanoparticles in PAN solutions decreased loss tangent (tan ) over the frequency range examined, that in PS solutions more than 2 wt% increased tan at the frequency more than ca. 2 rad/s.
