Strain-induced Crystallization and Mechanical Properties of Carbon Nanotubes Reinforced Natural Rubber

Natural rubber is an elastomeric material and its ability to crystallize at large deformations results in an extraordinary toughness. However, natural rubber needs the reinforcing materials to improve the mechanical strength, thermal stability and abrasion resistance for commercial application. For this reason nano structured particles are often used as reinforcing materials in commercial rubbers. In this work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used as nano-reinforcement in an advanced commercial carbon/rubber composite. CNTs have unusual mechanical, electrical, magnetic properties and excellent tensile strength greater than steel because of their geometrical features. The structural development in CNT-reinforced natural rubber upon stretching uni-axially was investigated by the synchrotron X-ray scattering. The strain-induced crystallization of reinforced rubber composites with CNTs and carbon black were compared. For the x-ray data analysis, the structure of oriented rubber was decomposed into three phases; isotropic amorphous, oriented noncrystalline and crystalline phase. Each component, then, was monitored during the stretching.
