Template directed formation of nanostructures of biomolecules and inorganic nano-materials on silicon surface

We present here a method for production of nanostructures of biomolecules such as DNA, protein and inorganic materials including nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes on silicon surfaces by using an atomic force microscopy based nanofabrication. A self assembled monolayer of silane was formed on silicon surface by wet chemistry process, the organic monolayer was oxidized by a conductive AFM tip under an applied voltage to form a carboxylic acid terminated nano-template. These AFM tip defined nano-templates can be used to electrostatically attract biomolecules or inorganic nano-materials selectively to form nanosized structures on solid support surfaces.Protein nanostructures as small as 30 nm has been demonstrated and single nanoparticle level patterning has been achieved by this technique
