Microwave Assist Technology and the Mixed Oxide Method for Producing Nano Barium Titanate

The demand for smaller electronic devices is a constant challenge to materials scientists. New processing methods must be developed to control and produce the components for these devices. For example, multilayer ceramic capacitors require a certain number of barium titanate grains across the thickness of a layer. For the layers to become thinner, the grains of the barium titanate must become smaller as well. Barium titanate is typically produced using the mixed oxide method. This method requires high temperatures and long dwell times, which causes grain growth. Microwave Assist Technology (MAT) has been used to reduce the calcining temperature, and dwell time. An example is given from a calcination study of nano-grained barium titanate for multilayer capacitors. It was found that 130-170 nm grains of the correct tetragonal phase were obtained using MAT. Without the assistance of microwaves, the average grains grew to 550 nm to obtain equivalent tetragonality.
