public engagement, risk assessment, nanotechnology standardization

We introduce our activities on facilitation of social acceptance of nanotechnology, which we have practiced to support sound development of nanotechnology R&D. Our activities set up various reactions against policy making relating to societal implication of nanotechnology R&D in Japan. We provide a summary of our activities, the launch of an open forum “Nanotechnology and Society” in 2004, outline of the policy recommendations from the joint research project “Research on Facilitation of Public Acceptance of Nanotechnology” in FY 2005, holding of “Second International Dialogue on Responsible Research and Development of Nanotechnology” in 2006, and recent two meetings in 2007. Since findings from our research and forums have illustrated importance of public involvement to the policy discussion and R&D programmes, the last meeting was designed to reach public more efficiently.
