Association of Oligodeoxyribonucleotides to Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes: A Free Radical Study.

We are studying the dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by oligodeoxyribonucleotides (ODN). We have used atomic force microscopy (AFM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to verify the presence of ODN on dispersed SWNTs. Another study showed the presence of free radical inhibitors such as absorbic acid and Trolox hinder the dispersion of SWNTs by ODN. This result was quantified using a ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometric assay. The hindrance of the association in the presence of free radical inhibitors suggests that free radical interactions created by sonication interact to covalently anchor the ODN to the SWNTs.
