Synthesis and properties of spinel cobalt oxide nanoparticles

The spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles have interesting properties and potencial applications in pigments ( black nanometer pigment ), coatings, catalysis, sensors, anode materials in rechaergables batteries, solar energy absorbers, magnetism, etc. Inorganic nanoparticles with controlled size and shape are technologically important due to the strong correlation between these parameters and their properties. We prepared cobalt oxide nanocubes (single phase) by hydrothermal route using CoCl 2.6H2O like precursor. The mean edge length of these nanoparticles were estimated from X-ray diffraction patterns as 10.7 nm. We demosnstrate that the size and shape of these cubic crystals can be tuned by hydrothermal time, temperature and concentration of starting material. Magnetization measurements were performed, the Neel temperature was observed at 37.3 K, while the Neel temperature of Co3O4 bulk crystal is known to be of 33 K. The nanocubes were characterized by UV-V and Raman spectroscopies and their morfology by TEM and HRTEM micrographs.
