Modelling the Stress Transfer in CNT Composite using Finite Element Method

Since carbon nanotubes have special mechanical properties, they tend to be used as reinforcements in composites. The stress transfer between the nanotubes and the matrix at the interface critically controls the mechanical properties of these composites. The failure of nanotube/polymer composite appeared to arise from pullout of the nanotubes and from mechanical fracture of the polymer matrix. In this study, the stress transfer mechanism between the nanotubes and matrix and it's efficiently, is studied using the finite element method. In this model, a representative volume element (RVE) of CNT reinforced composites without end bonding is considered and Finite element method model was developed as the primary tool for analysis instead of molecular dynamics simulations. The finite element analysis of the CNT reinforced polymer matrix composite was done using a 3D model. By this model, the stress distribution at the interface of the matrix and the CNT was investigated and the results were compared with the experimental results. Finally, the results of this models, has been compared with experiment result.
