SELEX Communications SpA

Nano-structured sensors for ad-hoc wireless sensors networks, for vapour, gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection in a context of environmental protection and homeland security.

Main activity: C4I integrated systems supplier for land, sea and air applications for the delivery of Network Enabled Capability. Company’s skills encompass civil and military secure communications, avionics, Command & Control, and land, naval and ground satellite Communications systems. Interest in nano-technology is related to sensing devices for ad-hoc wireless sensor networks.

Research in nanotech:
  1. To study and verify the applicability of a new generation of sensors (decisional sensors), built through nanotechnology and applied for detecting chemical elements present in the air in vapor phase.
  2. To develop and validate such sensors, training them to detect some particular elements of interest, by means of artificial intelligence and self-learning techniques.
  3. To develop and validate integrated platforms for decisional sensors (incorporating sensing functionalities, data processing and transmission). The platforms will have the necessary flexibility to integrate other kind of sensors, when required.
  4. To develop and validate decisional ad-hoc sensors networks, for multi-parametric (acting on more substances measured at the same time) and de-localized (more measures in different points of space at the same time) monitoring.
