A Novel Microrheometer for Measuring Rheological Properties of Microquantities of Fluids

This paper describes a novel micromachined microrheometer, designed to measure the rheological properties of micro quantities of fluids. Measurements are achieved by monitoring the movement of superparamagnetic microbeads whilst in suspension in fluid when placed in a magnetic field. The distance the beads travel in a given time is used to determine the velocity of the beads from which the viscosity of the fluid can be determined. This is achieved by polarizing the superparamagnetic beads to align their dipoles by using permanent magnets. An array of electromagnetic coils produces a magnetic field gradient, which manipulates the movement of the beads within the fluid. The modelling of this device along with the manufacturing route are detailed along with predicitonas of how the device will operate in service
