Abstract:Since it is known that IL have the tendency to retain CO2 both physically (physical sorption) as well as chemically (chemisorption)[1], they can be used for the direct capture of CO2 replacing the current process based on highly corrosive and volatile aqueous amine solutions, thus leading to increased CO2 loading, and absorption/stripping rates, while reducing water consumption, release of solvents to the atmosphere and corrosion impact on plant components. On the other hand, their high thermal stability, low vapor pressure and tunable miscibility and polarity is making them a good choice as reaction medium and heat transfer fluid[2] for the conversion of conventionally captured CO2 into other products such as methane, e.g. through the Sabatier-process. IOLITEC, as one of the leading developers of ionic liquids for industrial applications is involved in two projects, dedicated to the use of ILs in both ways for reducing the generation of CO2.
