The paper presents an approach to high-voltage current-controlled switches, their structures, properties and application possibilities. Moreover, ways of merging these switches into core structure of HV processing components, so as to retain required switch operation but hide switch limitations inside the functional block, is discussed. This work is motivated by research related to HV SoI ASICs for automotive applications. It was found that HV switches are inevitable in signal paths and that known HV switch structures do not always meet the design requirements. New HV switch structures are specialized for specific applications. The switches and untypical modes of their applications are introduces, simulated and discussed. In order to solve the signal-flow swing vs. control-voltage limit problem they use one or more currents to set their conduction state, and the floating part of the switch is reduced to bare minimum. Number of different current-control and current-voltage conversion structures can build HV switches. Simplest presented switches sink/source their only control current into their input/output nodes. More advanced switches offer highly reduced input/output loading effect. Specialized switches may have DC separated signal-flow and current-control paths. Active operation control during both on and off state is also possible.
