Municipal street and public space lighting serve critical safety and security functions but their associated costs can be one of the more significant items in O&M budgets. While the concept of Bio LED trees have been proven through basic research, numerous challenges exist in bringing this to fruition. Melvin Senior Fellow, Lockheed Martin describes the use of nano technologies to develop a prototype and the repeatable processes for growing bioluminesent or Bio LED trees that through the photosynthetic process, creates a significant, sustainable amount of illumination at night. This will provide a clean, cost effective and renewable approach to outdoor lighting.
