Sb2S3 Nanocrystals in glass

Abstract:In this work conventional quench method was adopted to fabricate Sb2S3 nanocrystals in glass. To ensure proper mixing and homogeneity of the composition the base glass constituents SiO2, B2O3, Na2O, K2O, ZnO were mixed by wet ball milling. 5 wt% Sb2S3 of total glass composition was mixed by mortar pestle. The glass batch mixture was kept in an alumina crucible and melted in box furnace at 1300°C for 40 minutes. The glass samples were annealed to grow quantum dot and their distributions in host glass matrix were modified by annealing at different temperatures. The heat treatment was done in the temperature range from 500°C to 700°C. X-ray diffraction studies were carried out for size distributions and nanoparticles with size ranging from 15 nm to 80 nm were obtained. The size distribution of Sb2S3 nanoclusters was later confirmed by using transmission electron microscopy (Figure 2). The dots so grown were further characterized for optical absorption and Photoluminescence. Absorption spectra show quantum confinement effect for glass samples and band gap increases from 1.7 eV to 2.95 eV as the increase in annealing time and temperature.
