New Functions of Polyolefin for Manipulated Iron Oxide Nanostructure Synthesis

Abstract:In this work, a novel function of PP-g-MA has been successfully explored. Specifically, PP-g-MA has been selected to replace the conventional fatty acid surfactants to fabricate stable iron oxide colloids. The fabrication process was carried out through a bottom-up synthesis approach in solution: thermal decomposition of iron precursor (Fe(CO)5) in refluxing solvent in presence of PP-g-MA. By simply varying the ratio of PP-g-MA to iron precursor, stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles with tunable crystalline structure, morphology, and magnetic property can be achieved. The particle sizes, morphology and dispersion quality of these in-situ synthesized magnetic nanoparticles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Room temperature magnetic property investigation was utilized to further reveal the magnetic behaviors for PP-g-MA stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles by specify the saturation magnetization and coercive forces. The formation mechanisms of these magnetic particles were proposed based on TEM observations, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy.
