Field Emission Emitters Fabricated Using Carbon Nanotube Blasting

Abstract:This work proposed a novel approach, named CNT-blasting, aiming to fabricate cost effective CNT-field-emission anodes with high emission performances. This approach implants CNTs directly onto a screen printed silver paste by traditional sand blasting method, allowing CNTs to implant only on surfaces of Ag paste without buried in the paste. This would lead to less CNT consumption and higher surface density. To fabricate the CNT-emitters, silver, glass powder and solvent mixed paste was screen printed on a pre-cleaned glass substrate. CNTs were then blasted onto silver paste at an air pressure of 3 kg/cm2, followed by sintering the paste at a temperature of 400 oC for 10 min. Results from SEM imaging showed that more CNTs can be observed on Ag surfaces with CNT-blasting than with traditional screen printing, indicating higher CNT density can be achieved by the CNT-blasting method. For this reason, the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of the CNT-emitters prepared by CNT-blasting method was significantly improved by least 3.7 times. The CNT-blasted emitters could also properly operate phosphorous light-emitting at low voltages. The results have shown the CNT-blasting approach opens a way for fabricating CNT-emitters at a lower cost and with higher emission performances.
