Novel nanocarbon-based, lightweight, flexible EMI shield

Abstract:The EMI shielding capability of a material depends primarily on its electrical conductivity, its magnetic permeability, the frequency of an electromagnetic wave of interest, the total surface area of the material and its thickness related to its skin depth. Here, we are looking for a high surface area, metallic-like, electrically interconnected lightweight material that can be manufactured economically in the tens of microns range, is mechanically strong enough to be usable in cable manufacturing equipment and has a skin depth value that is about 3-5 times smaller than the material thickness at the targeted frequency in order to obtain a sufficiently large EMI shielding value (> 65 dB) at a given low material surface density. CVD Equipment Corporation has recently prototyped in its Application Laboratory a general purpose proprietary NanotoMarco™ transformation process, which is capable of transforming a wide range of nanomaterials into macroscopic forms utilizing a combination of low temperature process steps in a volume scalable, cost-efficient manner. The design and manufacturing of a novel nanocarbon-based shield meeting the former requirements are tested in collaboration with General Nano. First promising results obtained for two nanocarbon-based EMI sheets having surface density of 20 and 40 g/m2 are presented.
