The distribution of nano size clusters in deformed FeCu alloy by small angle neutron scattering

Abstract:Fe-Cu alloys are commonly used for a simulation of radiation damage of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) because a neutron irradiation enhances the copper rich precipitates (CRPs) with the sizes of several nanometer which is known as the primary reason of a RPV embrittlement. In order to establish the potential of defects behavior by dynamic precipitation and to reach a detailed understanding of the influence of both deformation and thermal ageing on Cu precipitation, we performed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation and small angle neurtron scattering (SANS) measurements on deformed and thermally aged Fe-Cu alloy. The starting material for this study was a binary Fe-1.0%Cu alloy. The alloy was made through a melting with pure Fe and pure Cu. After the samples were solution-treated at 850℃ for 5 hrs in a vacuum condition, they were water-quenched. The thick plates are 10% cold rolled, and isothermally aged at 480℃ for various times. The behavior of nano size Cu clusters are analyzed using SANS results on the basis of hardness test and TEM results.
