Abstract:Developing a nanodevice with simultaneous cancer imaging and therapy is one of the promising approaches for cancer treatments. In this report, a multifunctional cancer theranostic system based on magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agent and photosensitizer co-loaded nanoparticles were demonstrated. The manganese-zinc ferrite (MZF) was synthesized via thermal decomposition method at 300oC and further formulated with second generation photosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) prepared for cancer imaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT). The results showed that the MZF and Ce6 co-loaded nanoparticles with particle size around 100 nm exhibited almost non-toxic to the KB cells under 200 μg Fe/ml and had better T2 relaxivity and darker T2-weighted MR images comparing to the commercial MR contrast agent Resovist®. In addition, cells can be killed efficiently after light irradiation at 660 nm. Thus, this system may have highly potential theranostic abilities for in nasopharyngeal cancer or other cancers.
