An Electrolytic Reaction to Resist Saturation on Conductive Superhydrophobic Nanocomposites

Abstract:The following abstract investigates superhydrophobic nanocomposite surfaces that are continuously submerged in water. Unfortunately, the surfaces lose superhydrophobic functionality under constant contact with water. Until recently, there has been little analysis on this performance behavior. This behavior is critically important in many anti-wetting applications that experience prolonged liquid contact, and is a primary remaining barrier toward realizing the benefits of superhydrophobic surfaces in industry. Initial results in our lab have shown for the first time that inducing electrolysis of water on a synthetic conductive nanocomposite surface can extend superhydrophobic performance and resist saturation by as much as 100% in duration. The final paper will present these exciting new results in detail.
