Dependence of electrical and thermal parameters of CNT bundles on their geometry

Abstract:Carbon nanotube bundles are being considered for VLSI interconnect applications due to their superior electrical and thermal properties. In this paper we report the variation in electrical and thermal conductance as well as inductance of a carbon nanotube with its geometric features using a diameter dependent model. Also the dependence of conductance and inductance of a CNT bundle on the type of nanotubes, tube density and tube diameter distribution in the bundle has been analysed. We have tried to estimate these properties (conductance and inductance) of CNT bundles consisting of both SWNTs as well as MWNTs as fabrication results show that a real CNT bundle consists of both types of CNTs. The diameters of these CNTs follow normal distribution inside a bundle. It is found that conductance of a single nanotube (SWNT) increases with tube diameter and decreases with length (beyond the mean free path) of the tube. A MWNT shows high electrical conductance which varies with average tube diameter, length and no. of shells in the MWNT. Therefore, we can play with the properties of a CNT bundle by varying its dimensions and tube density.
