Importance of Solid Lipid Nanoparticles in Cancer Therapy

Abstract:A drug delivery system can be defined as a system that capable of releasing a carried bioactive agents in a specific location within the body at a specific rate. Anti- cancer drugs can be associated with colloidal carrier systems such as polymeric micelles, nanocapsules, liposomes and solid lipid nanoparticles, which can be actively targeted to specific tumor cell. The treatment of cancer is based on the delivery method. The cancer patients are using various anticancer drugs but these are less effective and have major side effects. Although many potent anti-cancer drugs can be clinically applicable, the above drugs are generally known to have strong cellular cytotoxicity and side effects. Thus, strong anti-cancer drugs without any cytotoxicity and side effects would be highly desirable. Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) have been introduced as an alternative drug carrier system to drug delivery. Due to the disadvantages of the other colloidal carriers (liposomes, emulsions, and polymeric micro- and nanoparticles), solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) developed. SLNs have various advantages; production without organic solvents, long time physical stability and controlled drug release. In this study, we aim to application of solid lipid nanoparticles in cancer therapy. It is expected that beter understanding and application of solid lipid nanoparticles for drug delivery systems would ultimately improve efficacy of cancer treatment. In this study, we determined how solid lipid nanoparticles can be used for cancer treatment. As a result; we found that substances which have antioxidant properties loaded solid lipid nanoparticles formulations were significantly more effective than free substances on cancer cells.
