| Abstract: | We demonstrate that the outermost proteinaceous surface layer SlaA of the thermo acidophilic archaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius is an excellent matrix for preparation of bio-Au nanoclusters. The archaeal bio-Au nanoparticles are significantly bigger and possess considerably different physical properties then those formed on some bacterial S-layers and studied earlier. To our knowledge, this is the first report on constructing of highly ordered Au nanoparticles on an archaeal S-layer. These bio-Au nano structures possess some advantageous properties, such as high stability to high temperatures, acidic and mechanical stress, in comparison to those formerly constructed on bacterial S-layers. Moreover, in contrast to Au as a bulk noble metal and to the bacterial bio-Au, the archaeal bio-Au nanoparticles possess unique magnetic properties. |
