In this paper, we propose a single-step technique to develop membrane-based microfluidic channels using femtosecond laser micromachining. The proposed method fabricates both the nanoporous membrane and microfluidic channel in a single step under ambient condition. The femtosecond laser pulses machines the Si substrate and first generate the microchannel and subsequently using different machining parameters, the nanoporous membrane is synthesized. The ablation of the substrate causes an accumulation of mass quantity of nanoparticles which forms a porous fibrous nanostructure in the microchannel. This proposed technique has a great potential in various applications such as membrane, filtration, and separation technologies.
