Abstract:This paper presents the first, high-fidelity numerical study of nanofluidic streaming potential-based sample preconcentration. Parametric analysis is performed to capture the critical effects of pressure and background electrolyte (BGE) concentration on preconcentrator performance. Our studies demonstrate that ion-polarization and electric field barrier can be established at micro-nano-channel interfaces and substantial sample enrichment (>10,000-fold) can be readily achieved using hydrodynamic flow. The results can be used for practical design and operational protocol development for novel sample preconcentrators.
