Abstract:Electrospinning is a simple, non mechanical method used to produce non-woven fabrics of ultrafine fibers in the nanometer diameter range (nanofibers).This method is appropriated to obtain high-surface-area polymeric fibrous membranes and is a one-step process that do not require further treatment to induce porosity, such features have important advantages in applications (i.e. sensors and catalysts), where large surface areas are desired. On the other hand, there is considerable interest in measurements of blood lactate. While blood lactate is a useful diagnostic indicator, its use hindered by the time required for a lactate determination. In this work, fibers and non-woven mats of polyvinylpyrrolidone and beef heart lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) [previously noncovalently labeled with 8-anilino-1-naphthalene sulfonic acid (ANS)] solutions were prepared by electrospinning. Electrospinning configuration yielded fibers with cylindrical section and diameter ranging from 130 to 400 nm. ITO coated glasses were used as fiber collector to obtain non-woven mats, whose properties were evaluated by UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy.
