Herein we described the synthesis of novel kind of silica materials prepared at room temperature in the presence of cationic surfactant, more specifically a quaternary amine (tallow tetraamine) to obtain silica-based materials with attractive properties, such as high surface area and narrow pore size distribution. This material presents very open network with macroporous (50 nm) pockets formed by mesoporous (3 nm) walls (20 nm thick). The key properties of these materials can be tailored controlling the experiment conditions (temperature, pH, stirring and surfactant properties and concentration). Surface areas of 900 m2/g and total pore volumes of 2.00 cm3/g can be obtained at room temperature. The combination of macro- and mesoporosity of these materials increase the accessibility of bulky molecules to the interior of this very open structure. The simplicity of its preparation, the low cost and toxicity of the surfactant used (tallow tetramine), its large surface area, and macro- mesoporous bimodal structure are important advantages of this new family of hierarchical silica materials.
