Herein we described a simple new strategy based on the synthesis of zeolites in the presence of inorganic nanoparticles used as hard templates. These nanoparticles can be conveniently removed by simple, inexpensive chemical treatment (usually acid wash) without damaging the zeolite. As a model system, we describe the synthesis of mesoporous silicalite-1. Commercially available MgO nanoparticles were used as hard templates after functionalization with alkoxysilanes by covalent binding with mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane. Silicalite-1 was grown around the functionalizated nanoparticles by conventional hydrothermal treatment using tetrapropylammonium as structure directing agent. Finally, mesoporosity was produced by nanoparticle removal from the zeolite by acid wash.
