The very small diameters of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) present relatively low resistance to fluid flow. This, combined with their high surface area, means that highly-efficient, bio-contaminant removals are possible with a thin filtration media possessing a relatively low pressure drop. Seldon Technologies has developed CNT-based filtration media (Nanomesh™) that takes advantage of the inherent properties of CNTs. Seldon has primarily focused on developing a CNT-based water filtration media. Seldon’s water filter material removes bacteria, viruses, spores, cysts, total organic carbons and inorganic contaminants from water passively using adsorption and sieving. The pressure drop across the filter is much less than what is typically seen with nanofiltration and reverse osmosis systems and can work for over 1,000 gallons of influent. Seldon has also worked on developing Nanomesh™ for air and fuel filtration applications. Seldon has demonstrated its air filter Nanomesh™ removed over 99% of an anthrax surrogate. In the past year, material was developed with near-HEPA filtration performance at a lower pressure drop. Internal testing of Seldon’s fuel filter media showed it was effective at removing bacteria from jet fuel. Testing by a third party has suggested that the Nanomesh™ fuel filter media will be very effective at cleaning contaminated bio-fuels.
